‘Local politicians buck passing’

PA Wellington Some local body politicians would try to blame the Government for rate increases this year, the Minister of Local Government, Dr Bassett, has said. “Worthy” local authority politicians faced the reponsibility of fixing their budgets and did not try to pass it on to others, he said. But it was local body election year and there had already been assertions that rates would rise because of GST and wage settlements. GST on rates would apply for only half of the next financial year. The

Government had said a new system of revenue sharing would be introduced from October 1, increasing the income of local authorities, he said. The Opposition internal affairs spokesman, Mr Graeme Lee, said he expected rate increases of about 25 per cent this year. He blamed interest rates, award settlements, and GST.
