Effects of dollar float

PA Wellington The floating of the New Zealand dollar has forced exporters to be more professional, according to the chairman of the Market Development Board, Mr Peter Shirtcliffe. “If one of the effects of the floating of the New Zealand dollar has been to cause many firms to reexamine the continued viability of their exporting, the short term pain may have served a purpose,” Mr Shirtcliffe said.

In future firms would need to ensure they could withstand short-term reversals and traumas. To survive, they would require strength, commitment and innovation, he said.

“As in sport, the day of the gifted amateur doing it for the glory on a shoestring and with a suitcase is fast disappearing. Professionalism and all this entails are the new criteria.”

Mr Shirtcliffe will be keynote speaker at two of a series of six seminars to be held throughout New Zealand designed to help exporters deal with changing market conditions. The seminars, called Export Challenge 86, will be held between February 24 and March 4.

The seminars have been organised by the Export Institute and will deal with the effects of the floating of the dollar, the loss of export incentives and other important trading issues. They will be in Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Christchurch and Dunedin.
