Byrd Mass for five
This evening the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will mark Ash Wednesday with a performance of the Byrd Mass for Five Voices.
The liturgical performance will be part of the 7 p.m. Choral Mass. A short recital will follow, beginning at 8 p.m., during which the cathedral organist, Don
Whelan, will play an extract from a Couperin Organ Mass with alternating plainsong, and organ music by Bach and Reger. Vocal contributions to the programme will include the soprano duet "Christe Eleison” from the Bach B Minor Mass, in which Christine and Louise Richardson will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble led by Eva
Schwanen. Another busy year is in store for the Cathedral Choir and Orchestra, including several recitals, a tour of the West Coast to Blenheim and Nelson, and the first Papal visit to this country. Some vacancies exist in the choir for competent sight-readers, who should phone Mr Whelan at 585-873 for details.
