Classical Sparks
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the Third Field Regiment for Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture in Hagley Park on Friday evening. The concert is part of the Summer Times programme and is the second “Classical Sparks" concert the orchestra has played. Last year’s concert took the organisers a little by surprise when 12,000 people turned up to hear the music and watch the fireworks in the park. This year the organisers have prepared more sound equipment to throw the sound further and the Lucifer Fireworks and Searchlight Company have prepared more fireworks.
The Third Field Regi-
ment will make sure things go with a bang during the overture. Also on the programme are works by Khachaturian, extracts from the ballet "Gayane”, a polka and a waltz from the Strauss family and a medley of tunes by the Beatles. The promotions manager of the C. 5.0., Mr Mark Skelding, said the pro-; gramme was designed to blend a range of “approachable and enjoyable” music. The musical director of Wellington Regional Orchestra, William Southgate, will conduct. The concert has been sponsored by J. Ballantyne and Co., Ltd. It will begin at 8.30 p.m.
