Music awards
Two Christchurch members of the 1985 New Zealand Youth Orchestra will be presented tomorrow with $lOOO each as recipients of the Post Office sponsored Awards for Excellence.
The Christchurch Chief Postmaster, Mr Syd Bradley, will present Stephanie O’Flaherty (violin) and Duncan Catanach (timpani) with their $lOOO Post Office Key Accounts. "The other three Christchurch recipients of awards are not able to attend the function. Jocelyn Woodley (cello) is studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Hamish McKeich (bassoon) is in Australia and Lisa Egan (violin) is out of Christchurch at this time,”
said Mr Bradley. The parents of these young musicians will accept cheques on their behalf.
The musicians were participants in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Festival of Youth held in Wellington last August
Seven awards will be presented. The other two recipients are Andrew Malcolm (oboe) of Palmerston North and Timothy Young (viola) of Wellington. The money will be used to further the recipients’ musical studies. The Post Office also gave $20,000 in 1985 to the National Youth Orchestra.
