Norman wins squash title

NZPA staff correspondent London Ross Norman just weathered an onslaught from a fellow New Zealander, Stuart Davenport, to win the Irish Squash Open final at Dublin during the week-end. Davenport, aged 23, recently elevated to third in the world rankings, won the opening two sets 9-5, 9-0, and was in with a winning chance at 8-8 in the third set

But Norman, a 27-year-old Aucklander ranked second behind Pakistan’s Jahangir Khan in the world, twice wrong-footed the Wellingtonian at the end of the 32-minute third set and took it 10-8. He won a contentious fourth set, 9-4/ and clinched the 1%-hour match, 9-2, in the fifth. Davenport’s 1.95 m (6ft sin) height often makes for a lively encounter when he and Norman meet, and the Aucklander complained on Sunday about the way the referee ruled on obstruction.

Norman was told he was not making enough effort to reach the ball round his lanky opponent and several decisions went against him. He asked for a change of referee in the fourth set but Davenport declined to give the necessary consent to the change.
