Mixed fortunes for cricketers
Christchurch Suburban representative cricket teams had a win and a loss in matches against North Canterbury during the week-end. The Suburban seniors dented North Canterbury’s morale as it prepared for its U-Bix Cup challenge against Nelson by taking a first-innings win.
Bob Kerr, with 94, and Bruce Day, 50, were the only Suburban batsmen to reach double figures, but the team’s 213 proved beyond North Canterbury’s reach. It was dismissed 52 runs short. The main contribution came from Bob Masefield, who had already borne a considerable bowling load. Suburban’s victory earned it the Minor Association’s Trophy. The senior B match at Mandeville Domain,
Ohoka, ended in a thrilling last-over triumph for North Canterbury. It was set a target of 177 runs in the limited 60-over match, and reached the final over with a wicket standing and 10 runs required. It scored 12 runs from the first four balls. Scores.—
