Dairy ‘may attract noisy element’
The presence of a 24hour dairy on Riccarton Road has worried some members of the Riccarton Borough Council. At a meeting of the council’s town planning committee yesterday, Cr Roy Lester said he was worried that the Hagley Park Dairy might "invite a certain element to come to this area” during the early morning. Crowds that might gather outside the dairy could annoy motel occupants and householders in the area, he said.
The dairy began 24hour trading after Christmas. Its manager, Mr Graham Hamilton, denied that it attracted noisy, un-
ruly customers. The people who used the shop were all “very respectable,” he said. “To date we have had no problems with any noise outside. I am living above the dairy and I have not had a night’s interrupted sleep.”
The committee chairman, Cr Derek Anderson, said that by extending the dairy’s trading hours the owners might have exceeded their existing-use rights. The dairy gave a good service to the community but the committee had to decide whether it was suitable to the area.
The committee decided to investigate the matter.
