Student flats hard to find

Fewer student flats have been available this year, according to a student services officer, Ms Fiona Border. The Students’ Association accommodation service has been placing students in flats since the beginning of the year and Ms Border said yesterday that it had been more difficult than last year.

“We still have a few places available but these are getting to be the places on the other side of town or more expensive."

Enrolment week at the University of Canterbury would begin on February 24 but many students had come back early to get flats, said Ms Border.

“Those who got in early got the bargains. People coming back from now will probably have trouble finding flats.”

Ms Border said that although rents had been stable for some time because of an over-supply of rental accommodation, rents seemed now to have risen because people knew students were coming back. The average rent for most students so far this year was $3O to $35 a week each for a fourbedroom flat but this would probably rise as more students came back, she said.

Some private board was still available.
