Favourite too old for title

PA Auckland A hot favourite to win this year’s “Miss New Zealand” crown, Auckland’s Joanna Johns, would have been too old to go on to contest the “Miss World” title had she won. Her mother, Mrs Alma Johns, of Te Atatu, said yesterday that she was sure her daughter would have won “Miss New Zealand” had it not been for the age stipulation.

Miss Johns would have had to have been ten weeks younger to have met the "Miss World” criteria.

Finalists must be aged under 25 on November 1, 1986. Miss Johns will be 25 on August 19.

“I am very disappointed,” she said yesterday after being placed in the top nine of the 18 girls who contested the national title.

“But I still tried my absolute best for Auckland on the night”

Miss Johns discovered the age technicality while reading the contract “Miss New Zealand” must sign before entering “Miss World.” She said some of her competitors had shown jealousy and bitterness against her because she was a favourite and a professional model. She said yesterday that she would “rather forget the whole thing and go on to bigger and better things.”
