Jobless march

PA Wellington Three hundred P.E.P. workers marched through Porirua yesterday calling for the resignation of the Minister of Employment, Mr Burke. “We’ll vote National to keep the P.E.P. scheme going,” read one sign.

The marchers were protesting against the Government’s “new deal” for the unemployed, in which P.E.P. work will be

phased out and replaced with schemes emphasising job training. Trade unions say the “new deal” will mean less money for the unemployed and no guarantee of jobs once training is completed. The Labourers’ Union organiser, Mr Keith Sutherland, said the P.E.P. scheme had become almost a way of life in the city.
