N.Z. soccer squad named

PA Auckland The New Zealand soccer coach, Kevin Fallon, will use the coming tour by Russia, which has been extended to five matches, to blood younger players for the next Olympic tournament.

Fallon has retained a hard core of players used in the World Cup qualifying campaign including Frank van Hattum, Richard Mulligan, Grant Turner, Allan Boath, Malcolm Dunsford, Kenny Cresswell, Kevin Hagen, Ceri Evans and Steve Sumner.

But he has added young players, Tom Mason, Noel Barclay, Dave Witteveen and Greg Little and Greg Brown who played a big part in Napier’s surprise Chatham Cup win over North Shore. Brown, who will play for Miramar in the Rothmans League this year, is still an English citizen but is likely to take New Zealand citizenship in time for the next Olympic and World Cup campaigns. Barry Pickering, back from an injury which sidelined him for most of last season, has been included in the nontravelling members of the squad who will be available for selection.

Also included are the promising South Island players, Michael McGarry and Andy Deeley, and the young Aucklanders, Grant Schofield, Lee Green and Steve Tasker.

The Russians, who are using this series as part of their build-up to the World Cup in Mexico, will arrive in New Zealand on Thursday and play their first game against the All Whites at Mount Smart Stadium on Sunday. This is followed by matches in Wellington (February 19), Christchurch (February 21) and two matches which have been added to the original itinerary on February 23 and 25 at Napier and Gisborne. The travelling squad is: Frank, van Hattum (University), Tom Mason (Papatoetoe), Richard Mulligan (Gisborne), Grant Turner (Miramar), Alan Boath (North Shore), Billy Harris (WDU), Billy McClure (Papatoetoe), Kenny Cresswell (Gisborne), Kevin Hagen (North Shore), Greg Brown (Mirimar), Noel Barclay (Mt Maunganui), Dave Witteveen (Mt Wellington), Ceri Evans (Christchurch United), Greg Little Mt Maunganui), Steve Sumner (Manurewa). The non-travelling players are: Grant Schofield (Papatoetoe), Lee Green (North Shore), Steve Tasker (Papatoetoe), Barry Pickering (Mirimar), Brent O’Neill (WDU), Bobby Peel (Miramar), Greg Fleming (WDU), Phil Alexander (Miramar), Michael McGarry (Dunedin), Alan Stroud (Christchurch), Andy Deeley (Dunedin City),
