Council’s view on cert.
Members of the Christchurch Polytechnic Council do not want Sixth Form Certificate subjects to be taught in the polytechnic.
At a meeting of the council last evening, councillors discussed an Education Department memorandum recommending that some Sixth Form Certificate subjects be taught at technical institutes. The council’s executive secretary, Mr Ralph Knowles, said the department was worried some adults could not attend secondary school classes, but wanted to study for Sixth Form Certificate. As a solution the department suggested technical institutes offer Sixth Form Certificate subjects when those subjects were not available at any high school evening class. The polytechnic’s director, Mr John Hercus, strongly opposed the proposal. Eighteen years ago the polytechnic had transferred all its secondary teaching to Hagley High School, he said, and it had no intention of reversing that move.
Instead, the council suggested that the first two stages of New Zealand certificate courses should be recognised as School Certificate and Sixth Form Certificate passes. At present students with School Certificate and Sixth Form Certificate are automatically awarded stage one and stage two, but the reverse does not apply.
