Looking over the progress of the new sailtraining ship the Spirit of New Zealand at an Auckland boatyard are (from left) Stewart Kahn, a sparmaker; Bill Jump, a mate; and Captain Nick Hylton, a representative of the Spirit of Adventure Board. The 45.2 metre vessel will have her first “voyage” before her official launching from Westhaven at the end of this month.

She will be floated down the Henderson Creek to Westhaven because she is too large to take by road. Sea trials will be held in May, and if they are successful, the Spirit of New Zealand is expected to sail on June 3. The ship has taken more than two years to build. She will have accommodation for up to 40 trainees and eight crew.
