Lesson for a would-be rapist?
Somewhere in Christchurch is a would-be rapist nursing sore private parts.
His victim's brave actions echoed a recent call by a senior detective in Rotorua, where there has been a series of rapes, that women who find themselves confronted by a rapist should try to be as aggressive as possible.
On this occasion it certainly worked. The woman, aged 34, was walking home along River Road, Avonside, just after 12.30 a.m. yesterday when she was approached by a man naked from the waist down.
The attacker, described as a part-Maori aged between 35 and 45, had a white towel draped over his shoulders.
He leaped at the woman and tried to tear off her underclothing. She grappled with him, then seized him by his unprotected genitals. He promptly fled. The police are treating the inquiry as an assault with intent to rape. A detective who interviewed the woman yesterday reported that from her account of the incident, her attacker was likely still to be in pain.
He was described as being of stocky build, about 175 cm (sft Bin) tall, and wearing a dark blue singlet.
