Seventh-round victory

NZPA-AP Indianapolis Marvin Johnson captured the World Boxing Association (W.8.A.) light heavyweight championship yesterday, stopping a bloodied Leslie Stewart at 56 seconds of the seventh round.

Johnson, aged 31, became the first fighter to win a world light heavyweight crown three times.

He previously held the W.B.A. and the World Boxing Council (W.8.C.) titles but lost each in his first defence. The balding Indianapolis fighter became the W.B.A.’s top-ranked contender for the title left vacant after Michael Spinks won the International Boxing Federation (1.8.F.)’s heavyweight championship.
