AUSTRALIA Market loses sting

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed barely steady in lacklustre trading yesterday with little overseas interest and most sectors trading in a narrow range. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index lost 0.4 points to 1069.0, the all industrials index had gained 1.3 points to 1622.2 and the all resources index had shed 1.6 points to 644.7. The gold index dropped 6.0 points to 939.0. Turnover was 47.8 million shares worth $69.6M, with rises numbering 220 and falls 219. About 570,000 BHP shares were traded and the shares closed steady at 718 c after reaching a high of 720 c. Among other market leaders Bell Resources added 10c to 520 c and CSR remained steady on 348 c with about two million shares traded. Miners traded lightly but with an easier bias. North Broken Hill lost 1c to 265 c and Peko Wallsend 2c to 522 c, while Elders Resources put on 3c to 117 c.
