N.Z. Youth hold on for draw
NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia failed by nine runs to clinch victory in the drawn first Youth Test against New Zealand at Manuka Oval, Canberra, yesterday. A solid 120 from the No. 3 batsman, lan Stenhouse, highlighted the Australian run chase but the target of 257 from 75 overs proved just too much as Australia finished with 248 for eight A last-wicket stand of 80 between Addil Somani and the last man, Brian Barret pushed New Zealand's overnight score of 148 for nine to 225 — Somani top scoring with an unbeaten 65 and the fast bowler, Barret, chiming in with an invaluable 29. New Zealand had notched 299 to obtain a first innings lead of 66 runs after the Australians’ 233, but the opening bowler, Chris Killen, claimed five for 56 from 24.4 overs to keep New Zealand’s second innings to a respectable total.
