Wellington side wins softball
PA Auckland Kevin Henderson and Poneke-Kilbirnie made it a double yesterday when the former New Zealand pitcher hurled his team to its second successive win in the annual Vic Guth Memorial softball tournament at Auckland. The Wellington team managed only second place in section play but disposed of the unbeaten Totara Park, 1-0, in the semi-finals before beating United in the final. The score was 2-0.
For Henderson, a continued stint in the national team would still be a possibility except that the 31-year-old, who last played for New Zealand' in 1982, does not feel he has the time to devote to top softball. Spearheading his side to the $7OOO first prize, Henderson faced 21 batters for seven strike outs; two walks (one intentional), no runs and only one hit. lan Stringer was named most valuable player of the tournament.
