N.Z. netballers win again
NZPA staff correspondent Washington
The New Zealand Young Internationals netball team beat a Canadian open squad, 81-24, at Toronto yesterday. The New Zealanders had the first full game of their Canadian tour to date when they played a team comprising Ontario members of the Canadian squad.
The goal-shoot, Jillian Smith, of Wellington,
played throughout the match, scoring from 55 of 73 attempts.
The team’s coach, Yvonne Willering, as in other games so far, switched goal attack players mid-way through the match, bringing on an Otago physical education student, Julie Carter, to replace Alison Wills, of Auckland. In the first half Wills scored 14 times from 20 attempts while Carter was successful with 12 out of
14 shots at the net. "So the shooting averages were not bad,” said Ms Willering. Quarter scores in yesterday’s game were 24-4, 39-9, 59-16, and 81-24.
The netball team will stay in Toronto until Thursday, using today for training and then tomorrow doing coaching and demonstration games at the local school before playing competition games again on Wednesday.
