Peter Knight wraps up 9-race series
PA Hamilton Peter Knight wrapped up the Epi Class grand prix sprint boat series at Lake Karapiro yesterday with three races still to be run.
The Christchurch driver and his big hydro plane “The Boss” have taken an unbeatable lead in the nine-race series.
The power of the boat’s seven litre motor and the experience of last year’s winning driver blitzed the field.
Knight won all three races last week in choppy conditions and repeated that performance yesterday in calm water. Next Sunday’s three
races now become a battle for second place. That promises to be a fight between two of the latest tunnel hull machines which battled for second place throughout races.
Repco, driven by a Paparoa driver, Robin Grant, finished the day one point ahead of Howick Boat And Motor Centre, driven by an Australian, Brett Wing. Wing looked like holding a points lead by the end of the day until his boat collected a buoy coming through the final turn in the second race. The boat’s hull was slightly damaged but Wing
was lucky it did not suffer more serious damage.
The accident cost him seven points for second place which was picked up by Repco which had been third. Wing’s boat was disqualified. Points: The Boss 54, Repco 25, Howick Boat And Motor Centre .24, Special Edition 19, Autocrat 13, Insurer 9, Bullet NZ 6, Chevy 5, Team CRC 3. Results:
Race 1: The Boss 3min 41.45, 1; Howick Boat And Motor Centre 3:44.4, 2; Autocrat (Gary Wallace, Huntly) 4:01.8, 3. Race 2: The Boss 3:41.4, 1; Repco 3:54.9, 2; Autocrat 4:04, 3.
Race 3: The Boss 3:38.5, 1; Repco 3:42, 2; Howick Boat And Motor Centre 3:44.2, 3.
