Trial yacht launched

NZPA-AP Stockton, California A new yacht that is part of a SUSIOM ($19.1M) effort in the San Francisco Bay to float an entry for the America’s Cup has been launched. The yacht, temporarily designated U.S. 49, is the first of two Bay boats that will compete in local trials for a chance to retrieve the America’s Cup from Australia. The boat, built by Stephens Marine, Inc., will be christened tomorrow. The 12m boat repre-

sents a hefty part of the $19.1M it will cost the St Francis Golden Gate Challenge Syndicate to float an entry for the world’s most celebrated yachting prize. The syndicate is putting two new boats on the bay to compete with each other. The faster will be entered in ‘ formal eliminations in the autumn (northern). The cup will be sailed at Fremantle, Australia, in January, 1987. In an upset ending 133 years of American domination, te Royal Perth Yacht Club won the cherished cup from the

New York Yacht Club on September 26, 1983, sending shock waves of disbelief through American yachting circles. On the day the cup was unbolted from its longstanding place of honour at the New York Yacht Club, a local effort was under way to win it back.

The Golden Gate challenge is one of 10 American challenges among a total of 24 bids to take charge of the treasured cup.

Other entries are expected from France, Italy, Canada, England, West Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand.
