Canty cleans up premier events

The Avon men and the Canterbury women had their usual monopoly on titles in the premier and open class when the Canterbury rowing championships were contested at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel, at the week-end. Canterbury cleaned up the premier women’s events in spite of the necessity to rearrange a number of crews because of the absence of the New Zealand under-23 representative, Linda Ross, who cut an arm at work on Friday.

The club’s top women’s eight was having its final row In the South Island before the national championships at Lake Karapiro. The crew is bypassing the South Island titles at Ruataniwha this coming week-end in favour of the stronger competition in the Auckland championships at Karapiro. Philippa Baker (Canterbury), also a prominent triathlete, collected three titles, including a comfortable win by nearly 10 boat lengths in the open singles. Avon won all the premier men’s heavyweight events with the exception of two sculling titles: the lightweight, Dale Maher (Union), had an impressive win over Avon’s John Cook in the premier single sculls and a North End (Dunedin) combination took the open double sculls.

The Avon club was a clear winner of the D.C.L. Cup which denotes the top club in the Canterbury province. Based on performances in the Lion Brown regatta and the provincial championships the final points were:—Avon 193, Canterbury 132, Union 69, Cure 61, Christ’s College 28, Akaroa 16, Timaru 1.

Avon was also a clear winner of the Colin Cook Memorial Cup for most points in premier events at the Canterbury championships, but this is one of three cups supposedly at stake which are missing at present.

There was much interest in the first appearance in a race of Avon’s new coxless four boat with its rather unusual rigging. The all-international crew of Neil Gibson, Les O’Connell, Don Symon and Simon Aplin seemed to have steering problems most of the way down the buoyed course, but the boat run was good and they won by several lengths. Earlier the Avon premier eight had recorded the excellent time of smln 55.75, more than a second faster than it managed in finishing fourth in the national championships on the same course last year. Among the closest finishes was that in the lightweight coxless pair final on Saturday when the Canterbury crew of Chris Duncan and Glen Hardwick just pipped Oamaru by 0.35. Eight of the 36 finals were contested on Saturday when the lake was a proverbial millpond. Even yesterday the breeze caused only a slight ripple and conditions were again superb for racing.

Union and Avon continued their great battles in the intermediate eights, but the Avon combination, coached by Derek Manning, triumphed for the second regatta in a row. After a protest about wash from the umpire’s boat the race was actually run twice, Union getting a little closer to its rival in the re-row early yesterday morning. Among the other crews to impress was the Avon lightweight eight which had a good row to easily hold off the challenges of both North End and Canterbury.
