Australia Bulls force the pace

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets continued their bullish recovery yesterday to close firmer, pushed up by Wall Street and stronger world gold prices, dealers said. At the close the all ordinaries index gained 2.9 points to 1069.8, the all resources index 2.4 to 646.3, the all industrials index 3.6 to 1621.9. The gold index finned 2.7 to 943.9. Turnover was 50.09 M shares worth 585.79 M, with rises outnumbering falls by 251 to 170. BHP traded quietly and closed 2c down at 718, while Robert Holmes a Court’s Bell Resources added 20c to 510 and the parent company, Bell Group, gained 4c to 698. News Corporation and Rothmans Holdings provided the highlights of the day, with News Corporation reaching a

high .of 1275 before closing steady at 1250. Rothmans closed 50c up at 700 on news of a good profit result. CSR gained 3c to 348, Peko and CRA both added 6c to 524 and 566 respectively and MIM 4c to 292. In the mining sector, Kidston fell 6c to 590, Niugini Mining lost 2c to 193 and Poseidon fell 5c to 275. Metana Minerals firmed 5c to 275, Placer 70c to 2470, Renlson 4c to 534, Southern Resources 10c to 150 and Consolidated Rutile 10c to 830. Santos fell 8c to 496. On industrial boards, ACI Increased 6c to 322, ANI 2c to 322, Adsteam 5c to 1210, AWA 10c to 590, Bond Corp 4c to 225, Fairfax 10c to 750 and Herald and Weekly Times 2c to 564. Losers on industrials included FAI and Elders-IXL, both down 10c to 750 and 340 respectively, ICI was down 7c to 223 and Coles 4c to 458.
