Alliance has good year
PA Invercargill The Alliance Freezing Company has announced a tax-paid profit of $17,990,324 for the year ended September 30, compared with $3,812,343 the previous year. The chairman, Mr J. B. Falconer, said after an Alliance board meeting yesterday that the profit could be attributed to record kills of sheep and lambs, increases in further processing, effective cost controls, and a policy of upgrading and improving processing techniques. After three successive years of losses, the Ocean Beach plant showed a profit Depreciation accounted for p,261, 877 ($3,796,843)
and a tax credit added $467,276 ($412,896). Rebates were $7,771,675 ($1,962,978). The total sheep and lamb kill of 5,305,154 was 62 per cent of the record Southland sheep and lamb kill of 8,434,201. The Lomeville plant killed 2,840,274, while Ocean Beach killed 2,464,880. Mr Falconer said that last season the company had enjoyed “better than expected returns.” However, “the removal of SMPs and the prospect of reduced market returns will result in inadequate returns to fanners for the 1985-86 season. "Stock production will decline under these circumstances and the developing trade in live sheep exports will present problems in maintaining throughput over the next few years,” MrFal- . coner said.
