N.Z. dollar weakens

PA Wellington The New Zealand dollar closed weaker at $U50.5300/15 from its opening at $U50.5310/25 on the foreign exchange market yesterday after

steady two-way trading. The kiwi traded up to $U50.5380, dealers said, but fell back later in the day — the result of a long-ended market squaring for the week-end.

On the cross rates, the kiwi’s week-long rise against the Australian dollar ended with it purchasing Aust76.3c (77.2 yesterday morning). It also withdrew against other major currencies, ending at 1.27 marks (1.29 yesterday morning), 37.9 p (38.5 p and 101.2 yen (102.6). Sterling finished steady at $U50.3950/60 after a mid-day rally.
