Riders felt the heat

Brilliantly fine weather added to a class of racing rarely seen on the West Coast, when the Westland Motor-cycle Club ran a very successful two-day moto-cross meeting at Kaniere State Farm. The prizes — gold nuggets set in greenstone and valued at more than $250 each — made for some of the closest racing for years. Local riders to shine were Geoff Mirfin (125MX) and David Singer (open enduro class). The 200 cu cm enduro class was a walk-over for Balclutha's Brian Jacobs, who turned some wry remarks about the pink colour of his bike into comments of admiration at his riding ability. Jacobs had seven wins from seven starts, all of them by almost half a lap. The most exciting racing, was the wheel-to-wheel battles in the open MX class between Paul McKendry

(Blenheim) and Dean Bond (Dunedin), who were level on points going into the last race. McKendry won it by a few metres. Results.— 200 cu cm enduro: B. Jacobs (Balclutha) 1, A. Silcock (Rangiora) 2, B. Donald (Rangipra) 3. Open enduro: S. Oliver (Christchurch) 1, D. Oliver (Christchurch) 2, J. Silcock (Rangiora) 3. Open MX: P. McKendry (Blenheim) 1, D. Bond (Dunedin) 2, W. Martell (Blenheim) 3. 125 cu cm MX: D. Latta (Dunedin) 1, G. Mirfin (Ikaumatua) 2, N. Ellis (Timaru)
