Burnside-West shares lead in Trusteebank Cup cricket
Burnside-West drew level with Lancaster Park A at the top of the Trusteebank Cup one-day cricket competition table when they experienced contrasting results in the seventh round yesterday. An unbroken thirdwicket partnership of 127 runs in just 92 minutes by David Farrant and Darin Cusack carried Burnside through to an eight-wicket victory over Lancaster Park B at Lancaster Park Oval. Meanwhile, the Park A team was suffering a fivewicket loss to Marist at Ilam. St Albans, a convincing winner over Sydenham, is in third place, only one point behind the co-leaders, with two rounds remaining. Yesterday’s results were: — St Albans 216/5 beat Sydenham 100 by 116 runs. Old Collegians 151 lost to High School Old Boys 157/4 by six wickets. Lancaster Park B 190/8 lost to Bumside-West 191/ 2 by eight wickets. Lancaster Park A 145 lost to Marist 146/5 by five wickets. Riccarton 206/9 beat East-Shirley 203/7 by three runs.
Points: Park A 10, Bum-
side-West 10, St Albans 9, Marist 7, Old Boys 7, Old Collegians 7, Riccarton 7, Sydenham 6, East 5, Park B 2.
The demise of Park A could be traced to David Dempsey’s dismissal in John Durning’s sole over. Dempsey had scored 62 runs in 74 minutes, and was third out with the total a most promising 95 in 17 overs. Park A survived only until the thirty-eighth over, as Garry Hooper, who has now exceeded 50 wickets for Marist this season, and Duncan Wild dominated the second half of the innings. A fine half-century by Durning and useful contributions from most of the other top-order batsmen saw Marist home with six overs to spare. In spite of economical bowling by Farrant and Chris Marks, Park B managed a sizeable total against Burnside. However, Cusack and Farrant made light of their task and the game finished with 46 balls unbowled.
Geoff Smith and Max Bremner provided St Albans with the chance to rattle on 115 runs from the last 15 overs of its innings at Hagley 3, and achieve a total which was always beyond the disappointing Sydenham batting effort.
Had a wide from the St Albans left-arm spinner, Mark Priest, not gone for four he would have conceded just nine runs from his 10 overs. A 29-run last-wicket stand by Stu Simpson and Mike Dolden enabled Sydenham to reach three figures. A towering six by Chris Flanagan completed Old Boys’s comfortable victory at the expense of Old Collegians at Hagley 1. Old Collegians never mastered the bowling of David Leggat and Brent Small, nor could its own bowlers make much impression when Old Boys steadily progressed towards victory.
Most excitement occurred at Burwood Park. East was well placed to win when 62 runs were needed from the last 10 overs, with six wickets in hand. Riccarton, however, kept up its stem resistance and East managed seven runs, when 11 were wanted, from Chris O’Malley’s final over.
Tim Murdoch, with 80, made the day’s highest score for Riccarton. Half-centuries were also scored by Bremner, Jonathan Eaton (Old Boys), Chris Wilford (Park B), Cusack and Farrant, Dempsey, Duming, and Ray Jones (East). The best bowling returns were the four wickets claimed by Leggat and Hooper, and Priest’s miserly concession of runs.
