Tory M.P.s rebel
NZPA-Reuter London A former British Prime Minister, Edward Heath, led about 40 Conservatives yesterday into a Parliamentary rebellion against Mrs Margaret Thatcher over plans to sell part of Britain’s Stateowned car-maker, British Leyland, to the Americans.
The rebels defied party managers and abstained after an emergency debate on the plans to sell B.L. truck and LandRover divisions to the American giant, General Motors.
Michael Heseltine, who quit as Mrs Thatcher’s Defence Secretary last month in opposition to an American rescue of Britain’s only helicoptermaker, Westland, joined the rebels in one of two votes.
The discontent over the B.L. proposals signalled more trouble for Mrs Thatcher. About 20 Conservative legislators refused to back the Government on a censure motion by the Opposition Labour Party.
