Fighters touch in lair

NZPA-AAP Canberra Two of the Royal Australian Air Force’s new Hornet fighter-bomber aircraft returned safely to base yesterday after touching in flight during combat practice. Defence public relations in Canberra said the contact between the two planes had been minor. The aircraft were flying in R.A.A.F. Base Williamtown’s practice areas out to sea, just north of Newcastle, when they touched. A spokesman said the pilots were being debriefed by safety officers.

He said there was minor flap damage on one plane and a tear in the leading-edge of one wing in the other.'

Both Hornets' were expected -to be repaired fairly quickly.
