Resident stops burglars
Two burglars were caught by a Mairehau resident last evening in Patrick Street.
A police spokesman said the man had seen the occupants of a car acting suspiciously and had gone outside to investigate. He confronted two men, one of whom was carrying a microwave oven, and challenged them. One man ran off but the resident apprehended the other. He took the keys from the car to prevent a young woman, aged 17, from driving away.
He was able to keep both persons at the scene, with eventual help from an older man, until the police arrived, the spokesman said. A microwave oven, spirits, and jewellery were found in a nearby drain. The items had been taken during a burglary in the area.
A man and a woman will appear in the District Court today charged with burglary. The police were last evening following “strong leads” as to the identity of the man who ran off.
