Low-key start to new laws
PA Wellington Initial low-key enforcement of new truck loading laws that took effect last Saturday has been promised by the Ministry of Transport’s deputy chief traffic superintendent, Mr Henry Gore.
The new law aims to prevent truck companies and drivers from carrying unsafely loaded goods on vehicles, and makes them liable for insecure loads.
Mr Gore said training packages had been sent for the study of traffic officers containing a loading code and instruction on enforcement.
“Initially enforcement will be low-key. We will be concentrating on education, making sure everybody is aware of the requirements. However, that it is not to say that bad cases will not be actioned,” Mr Gore said. The Ministry says an average 29 accidents a year are caused by insecure loads, causing 34 injuries, 24 of them serious.
