Poor surfing waves
Poor quality surf with waves only about one metre greeted competitors in the first round of the Canterbury board riding championships at Taylors Mistake yesterday.
After the end of the round the number of competitors in all events had been reduced from 69 to 40 for the next round at New Brighton tomorrow morning.
Among the seniors Richard Allen (South Brighton), Terry McHeron (Westport), Chris Fenton (Sumner), and Aaron Smith (Smith Brighton) showed out. Smith, still a junior, beat the 1983 Canterbury champion, Steve Francis (Sumner), in their heat. ,
The most prominent competitor in the junior section was Brad Smith (South Brighton).
