Bank pay settled

PA Wellington Most trading bank employees will receive pay increases between 17 and 18 per cent as a result of the settlement of the bank officers’ award early yesterday. The highest increases go to younger workers and to workers on the top pay scale. Pay for workers, aged 20, had increased 29 per cent, said the President of the Bank Officers’ Union, Ms Angela Foulkes. The highest pay rate in the award has increased 20 per cent.

The union has won three days paid paternity leave. Women who have been in the industry for 12 months are entitled how to 12 months unpaid maternity leave. The union and bank employers had agreed to create a new middle grade in the award which would provide better promotion opportunities for younger people, said Ms Foulkes. The new award provides regular 10-minute breaks for keyboard.

users, but the union is disappointed that it did not achieve more in its health and safety claims. Ms Foulkes said a claim for paid eye tests, the opportunity for pregnant women to work away from visual display units, and a claim for workers with repetitive strain injury to be guaranteed alternative work, were turned down. Ms Foulkes said those safeguards for workers needed to be built into legislation.
