Two successes for Oamaru owner
Special correspondent Oamaru Garry Young, the Oamaru owner, had a day to remember when he won with Worthy Adios and Patchy Boy at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. He races Worthy Adios on his own account and is a member of the Hi Way Syndicate, which races Patchy Boy.
Other members of the syndicate are Bon Cheyne, Terry Perriam, Tom McPhee and Bill Cubitt, all of Oamaru.
Mr Young is proprietor of the Hi Way Service Station and appropriately Worthy Adios won the race bearing that name. Worthy Adios recorded a track record for a trotter of 4:18.8 for the 3200 m after starting from 50m. Roy Hall was the previous holder with a time 4:20, set in May, 1983.
Mr Young bought Worthy Adios for $2OO as an unraced 3-year-old. He has now won 11 races, including one as a pacer. Now a 10-year-old, Worthy Adios had a year as a pony club mount before he was put into work with Dick Prendergast. He won seven races for Prendergast and three for Stewart Sutherland’s Duntroon stable.
He joined Doody Townley at Willowby at the end of October and has a win and four placings from
five starts from his new quarters. Kevin Townley improved Worthy Adios to second on the outer at the 1200 m and had him clear early in the run home. Patchy Boy, held on lease by the Hi Way Syndicate, has also had a change of stables since he won previously. He joined Terry May at Methven early in December and had been placed in his other three starts for May. His other three wins were for Prendergast. Ricky May set a slow pace with Patchy Boy and the seven-year-old lasted by a head from knowing, which was having his first race for some time.
Now a nine-year-old, and trained by Brendan McLean, Knowing was turned out after breaking a pedal bone. Vicki McQuade ran on solidly for third. The favourite, Yankee Grin, broke badly at the start. ,
Rolls Hanover impressively won the race for junior drivers in the hands of David Butt. He settled at the rear then improved wide from the 600niand did not have to be dnven out.
