Cable-car proposal
Sir, — I support P. A. Woodall’s letter (January 31), on the proposal to install a commercial enterprise in a residential area. The Port Hills must remain sacrosanct from the demands of developers. The siting of the proposed complex within the Heathcote area will not enhance the quality of life for residents. There is no doubt that the great majority of those present at the public meeting held at Heathcote recently do not welcome the complex. Even though this development concerns the whole of Christchurch, it is up to the residents of Heathcote particularly to fight this proposal. I suggest that they set up a residents’ association and get organised so that they can present their views at the planning hearings' in a thoroughly prepared manner. What good is an Act of Parliament if it does not protect what it is supposed to protect? — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. February 2, 1986.
