Wine industry

Sir,—ln his reply to your article, Mr Caygill gave a resume of the grape-growing industry and its problems without discussing anything new. Like an experienced politician that he now is, Mr Caygill, however, did not consider your pertinent question whether other industries producing a surplus would be likewise subsidised, nor did he disclose why the wine industry, producing a luxury product, should be given preferential treatment and the Hartevelt recommendation ignored. A few days ago you published a long list of bankruptcies but there was no suggestion that they or their creditors should be recompensed for their lack of business ability or foresight. The situation is that the taxpayer is assisting people of dubious business acumen to turn to more profitable lines which will result in the same taxpayer paying more for the end product. How dumb are we expected to be? — Yours, etc., A. K. HAMILTON. Loburn, February 4, 1986.
