Billy T. scared by threats
PA Auckland Billy T. James has been receiving death threats since he was awarded the M.B.E. in the New Year Honours List — but he says it is no laughing matter.
The popular comedian and entertainer, who was named in October as Entertainer of the Decade, kept the news of the threats to himself until yesterday. With the police now called in on the case, he revealed that the campaign had caused him sleepless nights, that he had lost his voice, and had had to cancel a cabaret performance at Orewa on Monday. He said that he had become "paranoid” with fear not only for himself
but for family and friends.
“I feel like something is lurking around every corner,” he said. The threats began just after New Year when James found a note in his West Auckland letter box saying: "You won’t make it.” “It had obviously been hand-delivered,” said James, who told no-one of the note.' ‘ After he returned from a Californian holiday he found a sinister telegram in the post, which said: “Your father died this morning.” James said his “heart stopped beating for half a second.” The note he received on Tuesday sent him to the police. It said: “You’re dead.”
