Severe storms wreak havoc
NZPA-AP London Severe winter storms sweeping southern Europe and Turkey have killed 43 people, downed power and telephone lines, blocked roads, caused avalanches, and flooded lowland areas, officials say. . The latest deaths, reported by Turkish wire services yesterday, were four people in Turkey. Heavy snow gripping the eastern part of the country since Monday has isolated hundreds of villages. In Italy, rescue teams discovered the bodies of , four men who died in vehicles buried in snow on mountain passes. The incidents raised Italy’s total of weather-related deaths to 19. France reported 11
fatalities, Spain eight, Austria one.
The Turkish dispatches said an avalanche struck a road rescue team in the eastern Turkish province of Tunceli, killing two workers and injuring another.
A pregnant woman from an isolated village froze to death in Turkeli in the Black Sea region as she was trying to reach the nearest health centre while in labour. In the Erzurum province, a dam worker was crushed to death in an avalanche.
Forecasters said the big freeze appeared to be heading towards parts of northern Europe, with Britain among countries expected to be subjected to bitter cold and strong winds.
