Australia Market subsides

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier, with falls across the board as profittaking in industrial stocks, a fall in BHP and a continued weak resources sector pushed the market down, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 14.8 points to 1060.7, the all industrials index shed 10.1 points to 1609.2 and the all resources index lost 17.6 points to 640.0. The gold index fell 37.1 to 924.1. Turnover was 88.7 M shares worth $154.2M, with falls outnumbering rises by 332 to 165. BHP closed 22c down at 718 after reaching a low of 712, with brokers saying enthusiasm for Robert Holmes a Court’s partial take-over bid for BHP had waned and was regarded as being unrealistic. About 2.9 M BHP shares were traded. Bell Resources fell 20c to 490, while its parent company, Bell Group, dropped 24c to 696, and CSR fell 15c to 343. Further falls in world oil and gold prices overnight took their toll on the mining sector, with declines leading advances by 125 to 26. CRA lost 8c to 550, MIM the same to 280, Western Mining 12c to 338, and Peko Wallsend 16c to 520.

Gold stocks fell across the board. GMK fell 50c to 880, Central Norseman 40c to 680, Kidston 32c to 598 and Poseidon 15c to 275. Oil and gas stocks also traded easier, with Santos dropping 16c to 498,
