Hospital dispute for conciliation

PA Auckland Parties to a dispute which has led to a walkout by 115 kitchen staff in Northland hospitals will meet tomorrow before a conciliator.

In the High Court at Auckland yesterday, counsel for Advanced Food Systems International, Ltd, Mr Hugh Fulton, said that company representatives would attend the meeting, called by the Auckland Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Union. Yesterday’s High Court hearing was the latest in a series over the company’s application for an interim injunction against the union to seek a ban on its making contact with the striking workers.

After more than three hours of submissions, Mr Justice Prichard adjourned the hearing at 6 p.m. until Tuesday. “I dont think an interim

order will make an iota or difference here,” said his Honour. Such an order, he said, could “rock the boat” when it came to negotiations. “The parties have got to do their utmost to get over this hurdle.” Mr Justice Prichard was referring to the workers’ fear that the transfer of their jobs from the Northland Area Health Board to Advanced Food Systems International could lead to a loss of jobs.
