Page crashes out of fours
PA Hamilton Two Commonwealth Games team nominees were knocked out of the fours at the women’s national bowling tournament at Hamilton yesterday. The nominees, Ann Katavich and Denise Page, will be notable absentees when post-section play starts today with 151 teams vying for the fours title. Page (Linwood) and Katavich (Point Wells) both lost vital games yesterday morning — Page going down to Betty Dalton (Papatoetoe), 16-22, and Katavich being beaten, 18-15, by Wairere’s Jean Herdman. Three others selected for the Commonwealth Games team, Rhoda Ryan (Matamata), Joyce Osborne (Manawatu) and Judy Howat (Wellington), qualified for post-section play without a loss. Cis Winstanley (Marewa), the winner of seven fours titles between 1958 and 1978, also con-
vincingly won all six games she played. Her consistent wins included 31-8 and 23-10 victories. Jean Ryan (Carlton), the winner of the 1983 and 1984 titles, assured her four of a place in post-section play by beating Muriel Bowen (Thames), 23-19. Kapiti’s Daphne Le Breton continued to thumb her nose at those who failed to nominate her for the Edinburgh Games. She has won all her five games with scores of 3512, 16-15, 28-11, 24-11 and 27-13. Post-section play begins today and continues on Sunday. The singles begin tomorrow and the pairs on Monday. The final list of fours qualifiers for post section play is: J. Leadbeater (Matamata), C.
