A watertight ski-ing lead
Two wins last week-end have given Debbie Bain an unassailable lead in the women’s A grade section of the New World South Island water ski-ing championships. She has a perfect score of 7000 points.
Last week-end the sixth and seventh rounds of the championships were held in ideal conditions on Lake Kanere. The only mishap was when Jimmy White, of Nelson, took a bad fall in the junior event on Sunday. The race had to be cut short.
The racing in the A class was close on both days, with Marshall Brown and Brian Lewis being pushed hard by a rapidly-improving newcomer, Grant Silvester.
John Scott led the open event on Saturday until he fell with less than three laps remaining. This allowed Darren Randle to come home first, ahead of Chris Mulvey. Mulvey looked set to reverse the order on Sunday. He led Randle for an hour, only to have victory snatched away from him on the last lap when the boat towing him ran out of petrol.
There was some close racing in the novice and sub-
junior events. In the latter Kylie Morris and Rebecca Aitchison had two great battles, with each managing a win.
