$30,000 paid for Criffel Elk
PA Wanaka An assortment of breeding deer fetched a total of nearly $500,000 at a Criffel Deer Park no-reserve auction. Top price was $30,000 for a three-year-old New Zealand-bred Elk bull. A total of 106 buyers registered for the sale, 18 of whom bought stock. Most were from the Invercargill area, and North Island breeders took some lots. Rob Jennings, of Invercargill, bought a six-year-old Wapiti bull of 352 kg, bred at Criffel, for $ll,OOO. A three-year-old New Zealand-born Wapiti bull, sired by a Canadian elk, went to Frank Mee, of Queenstown, for $BOOO.
Another six-year-old from top New Zealand Wapiti stock fetched $5500, bought by R. E. McMillan and Son, of Oamaru. Criffel’s managing director, Mr Tim Wallis, said he was happy with the attendance, spread of bidding and the result. Average prices for females: Five Elk-Wapiti-cross yearling cows: $5400. Forty Red-Wapiti-cross yearling hinds: $2816. Ten Red yearling hinds from Criffel stock mated with Wamham stag imported from Britain: $3lBO. Sixty Red yearling hinds: $2562. Forty Red yearling hinds captured by helicopter and on Criffel before November 30 last: $2312.
