Another gold to N.Z. chef
NZPA staff correspondent London An Auckland chef, Mark Gregory, continued to make his mark against the world’s best when he won a third gold medal at the Salon Culinalre competition in London. Gregory, the executive chef at De Brett’s Hotel in Auckland, boosted his medal tally with a win in the international fish class. He earlier took top honours in the New Zealand lamb and nouvelle cuisine competitions, and won a bronze medal for his hors d’oeuvres entry. The Auckland City team, which includes Gregory, the Hyatt hotel chief, Simon MacNamara, and Vicki Bruhns-Bolder-son, of the Bayswater Cafe in Napier, lies second over all. MacNamara and Bruhns-Bold-erson have both contributed silver medals, and MacNamara also has two certificates of merit. A 22-member Irish team leads the contest, which is rated Europe’s premier event for chefs. The Cookery and Food Association of New Zealand team is also in the medal hunt. Greg Heffernan, who is due to start at the Huka Lodge, Taupo, on his return, won a silver medal in the international fish class. Ricky RutledgeManning, of the Rose Park Hotel in Parnell, won the bronze.
