Extradition order hearing delayed

NZPA-AAP Sydney A New Zealand-born Indian faith healer and leader of a religious commune yesterday successfully had extradition proceedings against him delayed for a week. Armit Lal Narain, aged 50, appeared in the Local Court at Waverly to face extradition on charges of illegal detention, assault and kidnapping which allegedly happened in New Zealand in 1983 and 1985. The Magistrate, Mr Ken Henderson, adjourned the case to the Castlereagh Street Court on February 11 after hearing that Narain would oppose the extradition. Narain was granted $20,000 bail and ordered to report to the police daily and to surrender his passport.

No plea was entered. Narain was arrested in Sydney last month under a provisional warrant from the New Zealand police. It was alleged he threatened one of his commune members, Nell Grace Amitt, with a hot poker, beat her with pipes, and kept her imprisoned in a pit in a garage. It also was alleged he took her off medication for epilepsy, asserting he could cure her, and had thrown her into a pool while she was having an epileptic fit, refused her food and kept her chained up at night. He also was accused of allegedly kidnapping Nell Amitt by bringing her to Sydney in June of last year.
