Ford New Zealand announced on Friday that it will close its Lower Hutt vehicle assembly plant, which employs 700 people, in mid-1988. Mr Beetham said the economic and social costs to those cities which lost industries, and the consequent pressures on the cities which gained them, were equally enormous. “In either case it is Labour’s provincial constituency which will suffer the most,” he said.
