Review of Ice visit rules

Wellington reporter The Government is reviewing the instructions governing treatment given members of private expeditions to the Antarctic by New Zealand’s base there, according to the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. The review had been provoked by the recent "skirmish” with Greenpeace. Mr Lange said he know few details but wanted the review completed “fairly promptly” to defuse the issue. “This sort of stand-off escalates the intensity of the campaign for the objectives of various groups which are potentially in conflict with what has been a positive and constructive management of a great resource by concerned treaty partners who, in recent times, have taken great steps to bring into consultation lots more nations,” he said. Mr Lange indicated, however, that the problem was not so much with the rules as with the way they were being interpreted and applied.
