Meat schedule

Sir, — When the Meat Board brought down a conservative schedule for the coming season, the shock was great enough.

Farmers reacted quickly to the weight required. The meat exporters pressurised the Government to bring back free trading of meat, which proved that the Meat Board did not have the power it thought it had. Why should the Meat Board still take a meat levy from the farmers’ returns? A levy was partially introduced for a minimum price, plus promotion. The confusion created by the 18 lamb grades must make some farmers wonder if they are being unduly penalised. Too fat, too thin, and in-between should not require so many grades. Admittedly some trimming will be required. Why should meat exporters use the grades to push the price down? A premium on lamb to farmers would have encouraged them to have kept the chains full. — Yours, etc., V. SHADBOLT. February 1, 1986.
