Polo swimmer wins long-distance title
A New Zealand water-polo representative, John Davie (Avon Aquatics), won the Canterbury long-distance swimming championship on Akaroa harbour on Sunday. Davie won the three mile event from Tikao Bay to Akaroa in 56min 275, 96s ahead of lan Butterworth (Wharenui), a well known member of . the masters swimming fraternity. There were 18 entries for the three mile swim, A former national water-polo player, Richard Clarke
(Wharenui) was third. A local, Vanetia Bingham (Akaroa) won the women’s section in Ihr 29min 19s. A one mile swim and a half mile swim were held in conjunction With the main championship. Conditions were excellent for the races which had been postponed from January 2. Results:— Three mile championship.—Men: J. Davie (Avon) 56:27, 1; I. Butterworth (Wharenui), 58:03, 2: R.
